Naturopathic medicine is primary care and complementary medicine that treats the underlying cause of disease; it is the art and science of supporting the natural healing processes of the patient and removing any obstacles to those processes when possible. It is the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of physical, mental and emotional conditions; and it is the promotion of well-being using therapeutics that primarily support or enhance a patient’s overall health.

In BC, naturopathic doctors (NDs) are licensed to provide primary health care: Health care that emphasizes disease prevention by providing an individualized, patient-centered focus on healthy living, natural health products and therapies, diet, appropriate diagnostic testing and, when appropriate, integrating conventional medical care with complementary care.

Seeing an ND for the first time may be similar to seeing an MD—all primary care providers review health history and request standard diagnostic tests—but a consultation with an ND also encompasses a thorough assessment of personal health risks, including diet, exercise and stress.

An emphasis on disease prevention, nutritional advice, and natural health products are common practice amongst NDs. Underlying causes of disease are addressed with patients, not just symptoms. Educating patients on risk, considering contraindications / synergistic actions with drug and natural supplements, and encouraging self-responsibility for health are the foundation of the ND-patient relationship.

Patient care focused on wellness encompasses physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors. Using evidence-based and evidence informed therapeutic options for patients, your ND may recommend botanical (or herbal) medicines, techniques used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) such as acupuncture, as well as physical medicine to correct stress or trauma-induced misalignments of muscle and the skeletal system.

Many naturopathic doctors in BC have additional college-certified training in pharmaceutical prescriptions, immunization for those five years and older, IV and injection therapies, and physical medicine procedures such as prolotherapy.

Acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner's hands or with electrical stimulation.

Acupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi, pronounced "chee") through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi, thereby improving health.

Studies have shown that acupuncture is effective for a variety of conditions.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Acupuncture is done using hair-thin needles. Most people report feeling minimal pain as the needle is inserted. The needle is inserted to a point that produces a sensation of pressure or ache. Needles may be heated during the treatment or mild electric current may be applied to them. Some people report acupuncture makes them feel energized. Others say they feel relaxed.

Improper placement of the needle can cause pain during treatment. Needles must be sterilized to prevent infection. That is why it is important to seek treatment from a qualified acupuncture practitioner. Health Canada regulates acupuncture needles just as it does other medical devices under good manufacturing practices and single-use standards of sterility.

Acupuncture treatments from Dr. Arjuna are covered by most Canadian extended health plans.

Dr. Mark graduated in 2005 from Europe’s most prestigious chiropractic school, The Anglo-European college of Chiropractic. After graduating, Dr. Mark was recruited by one of his former professors to work in his clinic in the north of England. During that time, he was the team chiropractor for a professional European hockey team.

In 2007, after seeing a revolutionary technique being used in a friends’ clinic, Dr. Mark moved to Australia to work for the inventor of that technique. He spent eleven years at the largest pediatric clinic in the southern hemisphere working and being mentored in that technique by its creator. In 2020, after four more years of study, Dr Mark obtained a post-graduate Masters of Chiropractic Pediatrics. He specialises in prenatal and postnatal care for mothers, babies and children.

Dr Mark enjoys seeing a wide variety of patients and has worked with everyone from newborns to the elderly, young athletes to Olympians, UFC fighters, fire fighters, and those that don’t like to fight at all. You can find him attempting to mountain bike and ski all around Whistler on his days off.

Anita D’Onghia is a dedicated loving individual who sees beauty in everything that surrounds her. Over the past decade she has spent most of her time learning about the human body and how it is all related to many different spectrums of health and healing. She studied Human Kinetics extensively at the University of Ottawa and graduated with an honors degree in a Bachelor of Science. She continued her venture with the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition where she graduated as a registered holistic nutritionist. Within those years she grew a greater understanding of the bodies chemistry on a cellular level and the connection it has with all of its’ systems. Anita found herself using such information to analyze the holistic avenues and connect it with her studies. Through this new found knowledge she has been able to understand and conceptualize holistic modalities to a deeper level. Anita has expanded her awareness with MH Vicars School of Massage Therapy and has become a practicing Registered Massage Therapist. As a massage therapist her goal is to work closely with the tissue, releasing areas of tension to help rebalance the skeletal structure. Anita’s philosophy with treatment is to treat each client individually tapering each session to the clients needs and goals.

Anita is available for massage therapy and craniosacral appointments at Whistler Wellness on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays each week.

Dr. Richard is an Irishman from Scotland who has moved to Whistler to join forces with Dr. Mark to bring their combined wealth of pediatric knowledge to the Sea-to-Sky area. They graduated together in 2005 from the prestigious Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in the UK.

He owns and runs Alba Chiropractic, a multi-discipline chiropractic clinic in beautiful Scotland with a focus on paediatrics and elite sports. He has developed it to be one of the UK’s busiest paediatric chiropractic clinics, and still mentors graduates who come to learn the specialist techniques used in pregnancy and paediatric care, helping to build a healthy brain and body connection right from the start of life.

Dr. Richard believes this brain-body relationship is also fundamental to leading a healthier, happier and more connected life. Whether you are a weekend warrior or an elite athlete aiming for that extra 1% he uses a functional brain-based approach to treat the underlying causes of an injury and not just the symptoms that appear on the surface. Allowing you to live not only with less or no pain but to reach the best of your potential.

He treats using a diverse range of techniques, including traditional chiropractic adjusting but also other conservative (or dynamic!) methods depending on what suits the client best in that moment.

You may see him falling off his mountain bike or skis anywhere around the Whistler area as he tries to dust off the skills of former times!

Chris Parsons has been practicing Acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Craniosacral therapy in Whistler since 2006.

In his fourth year of TCM study, Chris spent his final semester and practicum requirements working under many highly experienced doctors at Tong Ren hospital in Beijing, China. There he gained a deep appreciation for the practical skills used daily, to great effect, in the hospital setting in China. These practices are very useful for today’s modern injuries and health complaints and people are finding Acupuncture to be an effective path to recovery and part of a health maintenance routine.

Along with acupuncture and the hands-on aspect of his healing practice, Chris teaches his clients how to balance their own health and prevent injury and dis-ease with classes and seminars in Tai Chi and Qi Gong. These practices have proven to be helpful across a broad variety of demographics; from educational Institutions, First Nations, Seniors activity groups, corporate and private clients and of course athletes. With over 25 years of study and practice in the martial and healing arts, including a combined four years spent in Japan and China, Chris believes that the combination of self-treatment through daily movement practices such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong and the ever-popular Yoga, along with hands-on treatments when necessary, is the path to maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.

Chris’s default specialty is lower back pain as he spent most of his 20’s with chronic back pain which he was able to resolve by having a daily practice using the tools of Traditional Chinese Medicine / Acupuncture and especially the coordinated and relaxing movement practices of TaiChi and QiGong!

Passionate about helping others find their highest potential in health and life, Chris strives to provide the tools and methods for his clients to expand their understanding and trust in the wisdom and natural healing potential of the body.

Originally from New Brunswick, Jamie moved to British Columbia in 1992, eventually discovering Whistler. He used it as a home base to travel the world while sharing his passion of teaching Scuba diving. An accident in Australia drew Jamie back to his psychology degree roots with the curiosity of how we could reach altered states of mind naturally. Upon returning in 2010, he immediately attended The Coastal Academy of Hypnotic Arts and Sciences to become a Clinical Hypnotherapist, while also diving deep into the world of yoga for the next 7 years. Jamie has been privately practicing at home for 12 years, guiding hundreds of local clients through releasing blockages, instilling self-confidence, and creating awareness and flexibility of mind. He has now chosen to expand his Clinical Hypnotherapy practice to join the amazing team at Whistler Wellness, offering 3 private sessions on Sundays.

Typically, your first session is basically an introduction to hypnosis; sort of a training session. You get to know each other, express what you wish to accomplish, and then he will guide you into a deep state of relaxation. Once you are there, he suggests positive affirmations to your subconscious. The entire session takes about two hours. Successive sessions could entail suggestive dictation, parts therapy, cording, regression, or perhaps Advanced Spiritual hypnosis. Typically, two to five sessions are required, depending on the nature of the issue.

As for recreation, you may find Jamie floating through the mountains on two wheels or a board, playing on or in the water, hiking the valley trails, or globetrotting with his wife and best friend of 20 years.

Please note: Jamie is not a Registered Clinical/Therapeutic Counsellor or Registered Psychologist so his hypnotherapy services are not covered by extended health insurance plans.

I was born and raised in Northern BC, and my health journey started as a young active kid. I grew up dancing for 13 years and had a few injuries along the way. I also grew up in an athletic family, watching people go through major traumatic injuries and I knew that I wanted to be in a career where I can help people similar to me and similar to the people I was surrounded by.

Out of high school, I initially studied Kinesiology, then I got into Athletic Therapy. After a year in Victoria in the AT program I wasn’t seeing the the benefits to my personal health with AT treatments as I hoped. After suffering with a chronic pain injury I was on the hunt for something that helped chronic pain suffers. Then one day I heard about Manual Osteopathy and how it significantly decreases chronic pain. Once I started studying manual osteopathy as well as began to receive treatments, I found my chronic pain starting to decrease. I also noticed how much trauma I stored in my body and how much was being released through osteopathic treatments, even my mental health was significantly increasing because I was processing and removing trauma. I would leave my treatments feeling lighter and like all of a sudden I had so much space to fill in my body physically and mentally with positive energy.

Once I graduated with my Diploma of Osteopathy Manual Practitioner in 2017 I jumped right into my Bachelors, then graduated with my Doctorate in Osteopathy (European practice) in January 2022. Right now I currently am just expanding my Cranial Osteopathy/Cranial Sacral Therapy knowledge through the Upledger Institute, but I do plan on completing another degree within in the next 4 years.

Osteopathy was originally founded because Dr. Still believed that you could heal the body without the use of drugs and surgeries. He created the 6 main philosophies of Osteopathic medicine which I base my practice on today. I use multiple hands on techniques to aid your body into healing and optimal functioning. One technique in particular is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). This is the hands on treatment manual osteopathic practitioners use. It is gentle and non-invasive and focuses on finding the root cause of your pain. Using these techniques we can treat a wide range of dysfunction in the body including respiratory disorders, such as asthma, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and migraines/headaches. We look at all the body systems including visceral, neurological, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal which is what makes manual osteopaths stand out.

In my spare time you can find me outside exploring our beautiful backyard. If I am not working I am either on the trails or on the lake. I can’t wait to work with you along your health journey. There is nothing more rewarding than helping people become their healthiest and happiest self.
